Destin Fishing Company Charter Boat Fishing history

John Maltezo

John Maltezo was a major influence on Destin's strong fishing heritage. In the late 1800's he arrived at the port of Pensacola from Aegina Greece.  He was contracted by the Navy to build ships for them, but later moved to Destin Florida after he was married. John and his wife Isabelle Weekly raised 9 children, 4 sons and 5 daughters on the land that is now currently called Heron Harbor. Among his accomplishments as both a husband, father and founding father of Destin, he was also noted for building four vessels in particular, The Dreamland, The Memory, The Sweetheart and the Primrose, which is currently on display at the Destin Fishing Museum. All four of his sons , Andrew, Name, Name and Nick, went on to contribute to Destin's rich fishing history.  The most notable though, was the career and legacy of Nick Maltezo who became a fishing boat captain at the age of 12 and ran deep sea fishing trips until he passed away in 1982. Among the boats he captained were two of the boats that his father built, the Memory and the Sweetheart. The next in line to carry on the family tradition of fishing in Destin was his grandson Todd Allen, who to this very day owns and captains the Destin Charter Boat Big John. The slip that his grandfather Nick used to dock at is now home to his grandson's boat, The Big John. This is proof that Destin's colorful fishing history is still alive,  thrives and continues to grow.  Welcome to the world's luckiest fishing village.
